Together Alone - Around the World Expedition

IMPORTANT NOTICE

As most Australians are aware, we in this country are facing a major liability insurance crisis. Claim payouts are spiralling & this has been reflected in the increase in insurance premiums.

This result of this has seen the cost of liabilty insurance for the sailing programme much less the cost of racing insurance, putting the sailing programme out of the realm of commercial viability.

Therefore, it is with great reluctance that at this stage we are suspending our current sailing programme after the yachts return to Hobart at the end of April 2002. However, saying that, Don & Margie McIntyre have new plans currently under development and it will not be long before we will be able to offer new and exciting opportunities.

THE CIRCUMNAVIGATION

The expedition will circumnavigate the globe, round the legendary Cape Horn to explore unique and wild locations. This is an expedition that will provide unique challenges and some fantastic sailing aboard the McIntyre 55.

Crew Contribution: $45,000  AUS (a maximum of  two positions left)

Some "legger" positions in the expedition are available as follows;

CAPE HORN - The Sailor's Everest

The "Cape Horn" leg from Sydney to Ushuaia is an opportunity to cross the Tasman, run the Southern Ocean and round the infamous Cape Horn. Sydney will be the centre of final preparations in October as crew join the yacht before heading south to Hobart, a shakedown for the many miles to come. Hobart located in the wilderness state of Tasmania is a sailor's town and makes a perfect departure point for a trans Tasman crossing. The Tasman behind you, we sail through Cook's Strait into the Marlborough Sounds, a break before heading into the Southern Ocean and making course for Cape Horn. Cape Horn, forever a sailors challenge, marks the gateway to Terra Del Fuego and our next stop in Ushuaia.

Timings:    Sydney 13/10/01 -  Ushuaia 18/12/01

Crew Contribution: : $20,000 AUS

SOUTH GEORGIA - Antarctic Oasis

This is a very special part of the expedition, leaving from the relative shelter of Ushuaia in Terra Del Fuego we will head across the Southern Ocean to the Sub Antarctic island of South Georgia. This island is riddled with fjords and its mountains are covered with snow and ice. The perfect location for Christmas, possibly snugged down in the old whaling port of Gryvitkin. It was at Gryvitkin that Sir Ernest Shackleton found help after sailing an open boat from Elephant Island, climbing the western shore and then sliding down a glacier on a coil of rope. His grave can be found on the island and South Georgia is rich in history with relics from whaling and sealing operations dotted around the shores.

Setting sail from South Georgia we will be heading for the warmer waters of Punta Del Este on the coast of Uruguay. The "St Tropez of South America", Punta Del Este is a fun stopover.

Timings:    Ushuaia 25/12/01 - Punta Del Este, Uraguay 15/1/02

Crew Contribution:    : $12,000 AUS

THE ATLANTIC

Leaving Punta Del Este we will head for St Peter & Paul Rocks. A meeting with King Neptune is expected as we cross the equator and then it is on to the Brazillian Islands of Martin Vaz. This leg will bring everything from tradewinds and gales to the calms of the doldrums. The weather of the South Atlantic High will dictate our course.

Timings:    Punta Del Este, Uraguay 22/1/02 - Cape Town, South Africa 2/3/02

Crew Contribution:   : $9,000 AUS

KERGUELEN - Wild Wonderland

Setting out from Capetown we will make a course round the Cape of Good Hope, across the Aghulas Current and into the Southern Ocean again, this time heading for the wild and remote island of Kerguelen. Located at 58 degrees south, Kerguelen is in the convergence zone where the icey cold waters of Antarctica meet warmer waters, generating an abundancy of life. Its high peaks and deep fjords are not only spectacular but allow many anchorages. A small French Meterological station is located on the island but otherwise it is rarely visited. Setting sail toward Hobart, we may see Heard Island's volcano, as we head out across the Southern Ocean toward a landfall on the rugged coastline of south west Tasmania.

Timings:    Cape Town, South Africa 12/3/02 - Hobart, Tasmania 25/4/02

Crew Contribution: $12,000 AUS

Sailing up the Derwent River to Hobart will see the culmination of not only a circumnavigation but an expedition that has crossed the oceans of the world, explored some incredible places and above all you will have faced the challenges and shared the rewards of the sea, with a small team of like minded adventurers.
