7th January, 2002 -The crew of the "National Investment Institute" have had a fantastic few days in Gryvitikin. Walking and climbing have been the order of the day through spectacular snow capped mountains, glaciers etc. The crew even recieved a rare opportunity, being able to sail up to the base of a glacier at one stage! During their stay there they have visited the Stromness and Husvik Whaling Stations. The wildlife in South Georgia is nothing short of prolific! Elephant, Weddel & Fur Seals, Skuas, Gulls plus King, Chinstrap and Gentoo Penguins for starters. The crew have had to keep a watch out for seals rubbing up against the boat trying to board. It is certainly the jewel in the crown that is the Southern Ocean. Persistant Northerlies have kept the yacht in South Georgia for a few days longer, however, I dont think they mind one bit.

Previous Updates:

2nd January, 2002 -This morning saw the "National Investment Institute" motoring down the South Georgia coast as the sun rose over the mountains. Quite normal until you realise this is happening at about 2am, the sea temperature is 6 deg C and we are in the Sub Antarctic! This part of the world has to be seen to be believed and the crew are certainly seeing South Georgia at its best! The yacht will visit the port of Gryvitikin for a few days before heading north to some warmer weather!

1st January, 2002 -The "National Investment Institute" left Ushuaia on the 28th of December, enjoying a fast run out of Beagle Channel courtesy of a nice 25 knot Sou' wester. This breeze gradually swung around over the next few days to a Westerly by yesterday. This short run has been fairly eventless; dolphins have been accompaning the boat on the way along with thick batches of kelp (seaweed) which have a nasty habit of bringing the boat to a sudden stop! No 'bergs have been sighted so far on this leg, but the sea temperature is a cool 9 degC, indicating the yacht proximity to the sub antarctic. Skipper, David Pryce, estimates that the yacht should reach South Georgia by tomorrow.
