"Spirit of Sydney" is
18.5 metres long and an exciting yacht to sail with an incredible pedigree. Launched by
Bob Hawke and commissioned in 1986 for Ian Kiernan to sail in that years BOC
Challenge. She was purchased by Don and Margie McIntyre in 1994 and has since undergone a
$350, 000 refit transforming her into a state of the art expedition vessel capable of safe
and comfortable passage making anywhere in the world.
Galley
The galley is situated athwartships at the front of the cabin on the starboard side and
has fitted 2-burner oven and grill Broadwater stove, pressure water system at the sink
with backup salt and freshwater foot pumps and a 3-compartment Eutectic refrigeration
system. The gas system uses a sniffer and alarm and electric solenoid gas shut-off switch.
The Head
Situated on the starboard side aft includes hand basin, Brydon Boy manual toilet fitted
with an Lectrasan sewage treatment system. A simple manual shower system is also fitted.
Internal Configuration
An integral collision bulkhead is fitted at the bow. The focsle which is secured by
watertight bulkhead and hatch is fitted with a large double bed. The forward cabin is
fitted with a dinette arrangement on the starboard side with a
removable table and a pipe cot above. On the port side, is fitted upper and lower single
berths and storage forward. The forward cabin is secured by a large water-tight door
leading into the saloon. The athwartships galley is on the starboard side and on the port
side is a settee and pullman berth. On the starboard side is one navigators berth
with the chart table and seat above the engine fitted amidships. Port and starboard double
quarter berths are either side of the companionway leading to the cockpit which is secured
by a large water-tight door. The head compartment is just forward of the starboard quarter
berth. To access under the cockpit which is secured by a water-tight bulkhead, you remove
the companionway steps and open a large water-tight door. Another water-tight t
bulkhead separates the aft below cockpit compartment from the rear compartment housing the
twin rudder shafts. The entire vessel is insulated with 50mm of foam.
Mast and Rigging
The Aluminium double-sleeved mast with triple-spreader rig was fitted new in 1998 by
Alyachtspars. The boom is a tapered aluminium construction and is fitted with an
hydraulic boom vang and outhaul. Standing rigging includes running backstays and
checkstays and hydraulically operated main backstay. The outer number one forestay
is fitted with a Goiot headsail reefing system. The inner number two forestay is adjusted
with a hydraulic ram. The staysail stay has a Goiot reefing system fitted. A baby stay is
also fitted.
Deck Equipment
All oversize Harken deck gear. Decks are covered with high-density foam sheets as extra
insulation and non-slip. An anchoring bowsprit and 24-volt anchor winch plus two extra
anchor rollers and large mooring bollards are fitted. Dinghy davits are fitted aft able to
carry 4-metre dinghies. Other stainless steel tubes support satellite communication
antennas, radars etc. mounted behind the cockpit.
Winches
Four Barient self-tailing 36 winches and five Barient self-tailing 28 winches and two
Barient self-tailing 24 winches are fitted around the cockpit.
Navigation Equipment
Omni hand-bearing compass. Raytheon pathfinder radar/Navcentre chart plotter and GPS. See
electronics fit-out list.
Sails
New mainsail, # 2 genoa and staysail fitted. Also carried # 1 genoa, # 3 genoa, yankee,
spare staysail, storm jib, storm trisail, spare mainsail, spare # 2 genoa.
Steering Gear
Twin rudders are linked with a solid arm to one single lay shaft turned via a quadrant and
wire steering through to the pedestal in the cockpit. Two hydraulic ram autopilots, one
Coursemaster, one Autohelm are solidly linked to the rudders direct. These can be operated
by a joystick tiller at the chart table. New Goiot tiller arms, ball joints and Edson
quadrant have just been fitted.
Machinery
Volvo hydraulic gearbox running high pressure hydraulic hoses to hydraulic motor located
in the keel which turns a stainless steel propeller shaft through a conventional stern
gland arrangement turning new Hydralign feathering propeller.
Electrics
12 and 24-volt systems are used throughout. Below the cockpit, port and starboard are
fitted four Dryfit gelcell 55 amp 24-volt batteries. Below the chart table is fitted eight
Dryfit gelcell 56 amp 12-volt batteries. In the engine compartment is fitted one 56 amp
12-volt engine starting battery. All electrical systems lead to dual circuit breakers and
electrical monitoring equipment at the switchboard beside the chart table. The main engine
operates both 12 and 24-volt alternators. A 6 hp water-cooled diesel auxiliary generator
below the cockpit operates both 12 and 24-volt alternators and the fridge compressor.
Hull
The hull is constructed of 5mm to 10mm Aluminium plate with a grillage of transverse
frames and longitudinal "T-bar" stiffeners.
Deck and Superstructure
Solar panels are fitted. One sliding and one standard Goiot hatch fitted to the foredeck.
Three Goiot hatches fitted to the cabin top. Two Goiot opening ports fitted to the after
bulkhead of the cabin. Two Goiot hatches fitted behind the cockpit port and starboard. The
two rudders and steering gear is accessed by two water-tight hatches on the after deck.
2001 Refit
"Spirit of Sydney" emerged from the Richardson & Devine Marine
factory having undergone a complete hull and machinery refit. The following work has
been undertaken by this very experienced shipyard;
Replaced plate and stiffeners in way of three small holes caused
during time in the pack ice over the 2001-2002 season.
Replaced damaged sponson.
Rewelded stem.
Refaired hull and 2 pack polyurethane painted topsides.
Repaired damaged stanchion bases.
New rudders.
New rudder quadrant, tiller arms and ball joints.
Repaired damaged centre steering post.
New Propeller shaft and stern tube.
Replaced stern pushpit.
Replaced check stay on mast.
Fresh antifouling & new anodes.
