The McIntyre's have recently returned from a five-month diving adventure in the Philippines aboard their helicopter-equipped ship 'Sir Hubert Wilkins'. They had been hunting for treasure believed to be onboard the 16th Century Spanish Galleon ' Espirito Santo' which sunk in 1624. Unfortunately they only found some old roofing iron. Now they're hunting more treasure in the form of a 'Targa Plate', provided they can keep their car on the road and assuming it's the right road.

"Margie is excellent at pushing the limit during adventures but when it comes to navigating from Street Directories, well- she's the same as any other woman !" said Don McIntyre "but we trust each other, so as Navigator, if she says hard left over blind crest then hard right- I'll just hold my breath, plant my foot and do it !"

Since moving to Hobart four years ago they have watched Targa race by their Blackman's Bay home each year. Each year they threatened to do it. Four months ago they bought a book called "How to Start Rallying". Two weeks ago local automotive specialists Autocraft delivered their Targa prepared Peugeot to compete in the Modern Showroom Class of the Event.

"We used to drive a Ford Festiva so upgrading to a Peugeot 206 Cabrolet is supercalafragrilisticexpialadocious Baby!" said Margie McIntyre "and now we have the perfect marriage, Don does every single thing I tell him to do, instantly"

The McIntyres are being trained by local performance driver and 2002 Targa Entrant Kym DeBritt.

"When I raced in the 1990/91 BOC Challenge, Single Handed Around the World Yacht Race it was the culmination of a 20 year sailing career and when Margie and I lived in Antarctica for a year back in 1995, it took two years of planning" said Don McIntyre. "Now we are at the bottom of the stack. Targa Tasmania is a unique challenge for us coming in as complete novices. It's a huge learning curve and everyone associated with the sport is being very helpful and supportive" said Don McIntyre.
