The Race
"Together Alone 2001-02" is organised as a competitive event for sailors who wish to race around the world single-handed in one-design yachts, two-handed or fully crewed as part of a team in identical yachts.

Course & Timings
The Race will start in Hobart and finish in Hobart.

Leg1: Sydney/Hobart  - Start November 4th, 2001 to Punta del Este, Uraguay – 7,700 nautical miles

Leg 2: Punta del Este - Start December 28th, 2001 to Cape Town via St. Peter St. Paul Rocks – 7,100 nautical miles

Leg 3: Cape Town - Start February 24th, 2002 to Sydney/Hobart – 6,900 nautical miles

Class III Feeder Race: Fully crewed Class III yachts will race from Sydney to Hobart starting on Saturday, 21st October 2001

Class I & II Assembly: All Class I & II yachts will be required to assemble in Hobart from the 17th October 2001 for scrutineering

Entries
Entry Forms for competitors in Class I & Class II are available on the Together Alone website. Entries for Class I & II will close on July 1st, 2001. Crew applications forms for Class III are available from Ocean Frontiers now. All potential competitors are urged to register their interest with the Organisers as soon as possible.

Class I: Open to single-handed sailors racing IOOD 50 yachts built to Class Association rules.

Class II: Open to sea-worthy monohulls 45’-50’ manned by two sailors.

Class III: Open to volunteer crew successfully passing an interview with Don McIntyre for provisional acceptance to commence training. Selection is not based on sailing skill, more likely on enthusiasm and ability to have a go.

Entry for Classes I & II is by invitation only and the organisers reserve the right to refuse, without explanation, any entry and limit the total number of yachts in the fleet to a maximum of twenty. Official entries will be listed in order of receipt when fully paid. When fifteen official entries are accepted for Class I & II, a wait-list will be established for other competitors. Competitors are encouraged to apply for invitation.

Sponsorship
With written approval from Race Organisers in its sole and absolute discretion, entries and individuals may be sponsored and/or financed by any individual or group. Tobacco products will not be allowed.

Entry Fees
Entry fees for Class I shall be AUD$20,500 and Class II AUD$22,500. To secure a place on the provisional entry list, $2,500 (non-refundable) must be received by the Race Organisers no later than July 1st, 2001 together with a completed entry form. The balance of the entry fee must be received by the Race Organisers no later than September 1st, 2001 for the entry to qualify as an official entry.

Entry fees for volunteer crew sailing in Class III for the entire race will total AUD$45,000 if signing on before July 1st, 2000 and AUD$48,000 if signing on after that date. Payments will be made in four equal installments leading up to the event. Places may be available for individual legs. Contact Ocean Frontiers for details.

Please note that GST is not included in the above figures and an interpretation from the ATO is being sought at present.

Eligibility of Yachts and Crew
All entrants must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the race. Certain medical conditions may preclude participation and all competitors must comprehend the English language.

Class I & Class II entrants must complete an authenticated 2,000 mile non-stop qualifying voyage in the entered yacht. Class III crew will undertake an extensive training program which will include but not be limited to the following –

  1. Have completed an Australian Yachting Federation (or equivalent) certificate course up to Coastal Skipper qualifications (or equivalent) with a recognised sailing school in your local area.
  2. Undertake a 2-day introduction course with fellow crewmembers on an Ocean Frontiers yacht.
  3. Undertake a 6-day 5-night offshore training course with Ocean Frontiers.
  4. Undertake a 12-day 11-night ocean training course sailing across the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand onboard the McIntyre 55 race yacht.

 

Training modules B, C and D will be undertaken on Ocean Frontiers yachts. Volunteer crew will be required to travel to the yacht to participate in these modules. The cost of these modules excluding travel to the yacht is B - $200; C - $750 and D - $1250.

Safety Regulations
The Offshore Racing Council’s (ORC) Special Regulations governing minimum equipment and accommodation standards for Category O races shall apply, except that some regulations have been amended and other special regulations added, to bring Class I and Class II into line with requirements established to compete in other events such as the Vendee Globe and Around Alone races.

All vessels in Classes I & II will be required to have at least three water-tight bulkheads dividing the yacht into four, approximately equal compartments and have an extreme end collision bulkhead in addition to the required bulkheads.

Transferable ballast will be allowed in Classes I & II. All yachts must be self-righting with a point of vanishing stability at not less than 125°. The stability issue is a complex one and is dealt with in detail in the official Race Rules.

Communications
As well as traditional HF radio equipment required under the Race Rules, competitors may be required to fit Inmarsat Standard C and Inmarsat Mini-M satphone (or such other satellite communication technology as may be deemed appropriate. Competitors will be advised no later than 12 months prior to the event).

Trophies
Trophies will be awarded for the Race overall and for each leg in the following categories –

Line Honours; Ist, 2nd & Third for each Class in each leg and overall. Special prizes will be awarded in the following categories for the Race overall. "Spirit of Together Alone" Award; Communicators Award; "Together Alone" Seamanship Award.

Disclaimer
All entrants in the "Together Alone" Around the World Yacht Race 2001-02 will be required to sign a comprehensive disclaimer covering the Race Organisers, Race Committees, Sponsors etc.

Insurance
Competitors in Classes I & II will be required to have $10 million 3rd Party Insurance cover for the duration of the event and all crew in Class III will require an insurance cover for training and racing in "Together Alone". The Race Organisers will offer a suitable scheme or individuals can organise their own cover provided it meets minimum criteria set by the Race Organisers.

Amendments
Ocean Frontiers Pty. Ltd. reserves the right in its absolute discretion to amend or make alterations to the event detailed in this brochure at any time without prior notice.
